Pet hair and spills are the two things that test any sofa. The right fix depends less on the cleaner than on the cover: velvet, bouclé, linen and leather each need a different touch. Start dry, work gently, and add water only once you know the cover can take it.
Before you start: read the care code
Most fabric sofas carry a care label with a letter code. W means clean with water-based products. S means solvent-based cleaner only. WS means either. X means vacuum or brush only, with no liquids at all.
If you do not know the code on your sofa, treat it as X until you find out. Whatever you use, test it first on a hidden spot, under a cushion or at the back, and wait until it dries before going further.
Removing pet hair: start dry
- Vacuum with an upholstery attachment, slowly. Do the seams, the gaps beside the cushions and the back, where hair collects.
- Loosen what is left. Draw a wrung-out rubber glove, a rubber-edged brush or a squeegee across the cover in one direction, and the hair rolls into clumps you can lift off. A very lightly damp glove often grips hair better than a dry one.
- Pick up the last of it with a sticky lint roller or wide tape.
Match the method to the cover
Leather
Leather wipes clean and wears well, which makes it a good choice for families with children and pets. Wipe hair away with a dry or very lightly damp soft cloth, or a soft vacuum brush. Avoid sticky tape and hard rubbing, and do not use a standard upholstery cleaner on it: use only a product made for leather.
Velvet
Velvet has a pile that shows every direction you rub it. Brush gently with the pile using a soft brush, then go over it with the soft brush attachment of a vacuum. Do not scrub against the pile, and be careful with water, which can leave marks and flatten it.
Bouclé and other looped weaves
The looped surface of bouclé hides everyday wear, but the loops can snag. Use the soft brush attachment on low suction, then a lint roller. Avoid squeegees and rubber brooms, which can catch and pull the loops.
Linen and tight weaves
Tightly woven covers are the easiest to keep clear of hair: most of the methods above work. Linen is cool in a Hyderabad summer, but check the care code before you use any water on it.
Stains: act fast, blot, do not rub
- Blot straight away with a clean white cloth to lift as much as you can. Rubbing pushes the stain into the cover.
- Check the care code. On W or WS covers, dab with a cloth dampened with a little mild soap in water, working from the edge of the stain towards the middle. Then dab with plain water and blot dry.
- On S covers, use only a solvent cleaner made for upholstery. On X covers, use no liquids: vacuum or brush, and call a professional.
- Let the sofa dry completely with air moving over it. Do not apply direct heat.
Old stains and pet urine are harder. Urine can soak below the cover, where surface cleaning will not reach, so it is better to call a professional than to keep wetting the cushion.
When to call a wet-vacuum cleaner
A wet-vacuum service uses water extraction to lift stains and the hair mixed into them. It suits sofas used every day by pets or children, and you can book one through the home-service apps in Hyderabad. Before you do, ask three questions:
- Have you cleaned this type of cover (velvet, bouclé, leather) before?
- Do you use water extraction on it, or a dry method?
- How long will the sofa take to dry?
Leather and velvet are the covers to be most careful with. Ask the cleaner to confirm the method before they start, and leave the sofa to dry fully afterwards.
Keep hair and stains from building up
- Put a washable throw where your pet sleeps, and wash it weekly.
- Brush your pet regularly, ideally outside.
- Vacuum the sofa once a week, including the seams.
- Turn and plump the cushions so the wear is even.
- Blot spills straight away instead of waiting.
If you are choosing a new sofa and have pets
Think about pets and children when you choose the cover. Leather wipes clean, and tightly woven fabrics are easier to brush than loops or a deep pile. At our Gachibowli studio the material library holds 300+ fabrics and leathers as physical samples you can lift, bend and test before you decide.
Bring photographs of your room, tell us about pets and children, and we will draw to it. The design session carries no obligation and no deposit.
