Hydraulic bed dimensions confuse almost everyone, because a bed has two sizes: the mattress it holds and the frame around it. The mattress size is what you buy a mattress by. The frame size is what has to fit through your door and into your room. Here are both, in inches, centimetres and feet, with a simple way to check your room.

Standard mattress sizes in India

Indian brands quote a bed by the mattress it takes. The common sizes are listed below. Mattress makers can differ by an inch or two, so measure your actual mattress before you order a frame.

  • Single: 78 by 36 inches (198 by 91 cm, or 6.5 by 3 feet).
  • Wide single or small double: 78 by 48 inches (198 by 122 cm, or 6.5 by 4 feet).
  • Queen: 78 by 60 inches (198 by 152 cm, or 6.5 by 5 feet).
  • King: 78 by 72 inches (198 by 183 cm, or 6.5 by 6 feet).
  • California king: 84 by 72 inches (213 by 183 cm, or 7 by 6 feet), sold by some brands.

Why the frame is bigger than the mattress

A bed frame adds side panels, a footboard and a headboard around the mattress, and a hydraulic bed also needs the platform and fittings that lift it. Across the beds listed by Indian brands, a queen frame typically measures about 81 to 88 inches long and 63 to 65 inches wide, and a king frame about 81 to 85 inches long and 75 to 79 inches wide. Headboard height typically runs from the mid-30s to the low 40s in inches. These vary by brand and by headboard design, and a winged or deeply padded headboard adds to the overall size.

How much room do you need?

Allow at least 60 cm to walk round each side of the bed. Working from the larger frame sizes above, here is the arithmetic:

  • Queen: a frame up to 65 inches (165 cm) wide plus 60 cm on each side needs a room about 2.85 metres (9.4 feet) wide.
  • King: a frame up to 79 inches (201 cm) wide plus 60 cm on each side needs a room about 3.2 metres (10.5 feet) wide.
  • Length: a frame up to 88 inches (224 cm) long plus 60 cm at the foot needs about 2.85 metres (9.3 feet).
  • If one side of the bed is against a wall, take 60 cm off the width.

Measure the wall-to-wall width and length of your room, and check where the door, the wardrobe doors and the air conditioner sit, because they can limit where the bed can go.

Extra space a hydraulic bed needs

A hydraulic bed lifts, so it needs room to open as well as room to stand. Check which way the base rises and leave enough clearance for it to open fully. A bedside table, a wall-mounted light or a low shelf beside or above the bed can stop it opening all the way. Our guide to how hydraulic storage beds work covers the mechanism and what to check before you buy.

Converting between inches, centimetres and feet

  • 72 by 78 inches is 6 by 6.5 feet, which is a king size mattress.
  • 7 by 6 feet is 84 by 72 inches, which some brands sell as a California king. Standard Indian mattresses are 78 inches long, so confirm the length of your mattress before you choose this size.
  • To convert inches to centimetres, multiply by 2.54. To convert inches to feet, divide by 12.

Made to measure

A stock bed forces your room to fit the bed. A made-to-order bed does the opposite. We can make a bed to any size, with or without hydraulic storage, drawn to your mattress and your wall. That matters most in a room that is not a standard shape, or when you already own a mattress you want to keep. Every bed is made in our own factory in Cherlapally, east Hyderabad, and sold factory direct. Bring your room measurements or your mattress size to our Gachibowli studio and we will draw the bed for your room.

Questions people ask

What is the standard size of a bed in India?

The common mattress sizes are 78 by 36 inches for a single, 78 by 48 inches for a wide single or small double, 78 by 60 inches for a queen and 78 by 72 inches for a king. The frame is larger than the mattress.

What are the dimensions of a king size hydraulic bed?

A king size hydraulic bed holds a 78 by 72 inch mattress. The frame is larger, typically about 81 to 85 inches long and 75 to 79 inches wide, depending on the brand and the headboard.

What size bed is 72 by 78 inches in feet?

72 by 78 inches is 6 by 6.5 feet. It is the standard king size mattress in India.

Is a queen bed bigger than a double bed?

Yes. A queen mattress is 60 inches wide, while a double or small double mattress is commonly 48 inches wide. Both are usually 78 inches long.

Does a hydraulic bed need more space than a normal bed?

The footprint is similar, but you also need clearance for the base to lift, so leave room around the side or foot where it opens.

Can a hydraulic bed be made to a custom size?

Yes. A made-to-order bed can be drawn to your exact mattress and your exact room, and any of our beds can be built with hydraulic storage.
