Hydraulic Storage Beds: How They Work and What to Check

A made-to-order upholstered bed. Any bed we make can be built with hydraulic storage.

A hydraulic storage bed gives you a wardrobe's worth of space under the mattress without a single drawer to pull out. It is one of the most searched-for bed types in India, and one of the easiest to buy badly. Here is how the mechanism works, where it beats other kinds of storage, and what to check before you commit.

How a hydraulic bed works

Under the mattress sits a platform on a frame. Gas struts, the same kind that hold up a car boot, are fixed between the frame and the platform. Lift the edge of the mattress and the struts take the weight, so the mattress and base rise together and open the storage space beneath. Lower it and it closes. Nothing slides out, so you need no clear floor space around the bed.

Hydraulic, box or drawer storage?

  • Hydraulic lift: one large open space under the whole mattress. Best for bulky things you need a few times a year, such as quilts, suitcases and winter clothes.
  • Box storage: the base opens like a lid and is lifted by hand. It has no mechanism to wear out, but you carry the weight of the base yourself.
  • Drawers: easy access to everyday items, but each drawer holds less and needs floor space at the side or foot of the bed to open.

Are hydraulic beds good?

For most apartments, yes. The storage is real, and in a bedroom with a small wardrobe it can replace a chest of drawers. The trade-offs are worth knowing before you buy.

  • The mechanism has moving parts, so it needs care like any fitting. Ask what fittings the maker uses and whether replacements are available.
  • The base lifts, so check which way it opens and whether a wall, a side table or a low shelf will limit it.
  • A hydraulic bed is heavier than a plain platform bed, so it is harder to move once it is assembled.
  • You have to lift the mattress to reach the space, so it suits things you use rarely, not things you use daily.

King, queen or made to measure

In India, a king size bed is usually made for a 72 by 78 inch mattress and a queen size for 60 by 78 inches. The frame is larger than the mattress, so plan the room around the frame, and allow at least 60 cm to walk round each side. A made-to-order bed can be drawn to your exact mattress and your exact wall, which matters most when the room is not a standard shape. See our hydraulic bed dimensions and size guide for every size in inches, centimetres and feet.

What to check before you buy

  1. The fitting. Ask what load the gas struts are rated for and how many are used. A thick, heavy mattress needs struts rated for it.
  2. The platform. It carries the mattress and every person on it, so it should sit flat and feel solid when you sit on the edge.
  3. Airflow. In Hyderabad's humid monsoon, ask how the platform lets the mattress breathe.
  4. The frame. Ask how it is built, and look at the corner joints and how the hinges are fixed.
  5. The opening. Check that the bed lifts the way you need and stays up on its own while you load it.
  6. Repairs. Ask what happens when a strut eventually weakens, and whether the maker will supply and fit a new one.
  7. The maker. A bed made to a drawing in a factory you can ask about is easier to repair and adjust than a catalogue item shipped from a warehouse.

What to keep in a hydraulic bed

Think of it as the loft of the bedroom. It suits quilts, blankets, spare bedding, suitcases and off-season clothes. Keep what you reach for every day in a wardrobe or a bedside drawer, keep valuables and documents elsewhere, and use breathable storage bags in the monsoon.

Questions people ask

How does a hydraulic bed work?

Gas struts between the frame and the platform take the weight of the mattress and base, so you can lift the whole bed base with little effort and reach the storage space underneath.

Are hydraulic beds good?

They are a good choice for apartments and bedrooms with limited wardrobe space, as long as the fitting is well made and you store rarely used items in them.

How much weight can a hydraulic bed take?

It depends on the gas struts and the platform. Fittings are sold in different load ratings, so ask the maker for the rating of the fitting they use and match it to your mattress and your use.

Which is better, hydraulic or box storage?

Hydraulic storage is easier to open because the struts carry the weight. Box storage has no mechanism to wear, but you lift the base yourself. Choose hydraulic if you want ease, and box if you want the simplest build.

What is the price of a hydraulic bed?

It depends on the size, the headboard, the materials and the finish, and the storage mechanism is one part of it. Guide prices for our beds are in our price guide, and a written quote follows the drawing. See what decides the cost in our hydraulic bed price guide.
