A custom dining table is drawn to the room it will stand in. That makes four decisions worth getting right before anything is made: the size, the shape, the top and the base. This guide takes them in that order.
Start with the room, not the table
Measure the room first. Allow about 90 cm behind every chair, so people can pull out a chair and walk past someone sitting. Add that to both ends and both sides of the table, and you have the smallest room it will work in.
For example, a 210 × 100 cm table needs a room of at least 3.9 × 2.8 m. If your room is smaller than the table you want, the answer is a shorter table or a different shape, not squeezing the chairs.
How many people does each size seat?
Plan on about 60 cm of table length per person, and a width of 90 to 100 cm so that dishes fit down the middle. The lengths below are what we draw most often, with a design from our collection of that size.
- 4 to 5 people: about 140 to 150 cm long, such as the Tivoli at 140 × 80 cm.
- 6 people: about 160 to 180 cm long, such as the Bellini at 180 × 90 cm.
- 8 people: about 200 to 220 cm long, such as the Infinity at 210 × 100 cm.
- 10 people: from about 250 cm, drawn to the length of your room.
Seating is rarely the same every day. If you host a few times a year, a 6-seater that takes two extra chairs often suits better than an 8-seater that crowds the room the rest of the week.
Shape: rectangle, round or corner
A rectangle is the most common choice and the easiest to seat along a wall. Round tables suit smaller or squarer rooms and make conversation easier, though they seat fewer people for the floor space they take. Corner and folding tables are for tight spaces, where the table has to give way when it is not in use.
We keep these together on one page: folding, round and corner dining tables. If your room is small, start there.
The top: stone or timber
The top is what you see, touch and clean every day, so choose it by how you live. Sintered stone is the practical option for a family table and needs no sealing. Italian marble and onyx are natural stones that ask for more care. Timber tops are warmer to the touch. Our full comparison is in Marble, Onyx or Sintered Stone? Choosing a Dining Table Top, and you can browse the stone and marble dining tables.
Whatever you pick, look at a physical sample in daylight. The edge, the veining and the finish are impossible to judge from a photograph, and our material library is where we show them.
The base: where the character comes from
The base sets the style of the table more than the top does, and it decides how much legroom you have. A pedestal leaves the ends free for chairs. Four legs sit best at the corners of a rectangular top. Check where the legs land against the chairs you plan to use.
Our bases are built in our own Hyderabad factory, and the families are easy to browse: walnut bases, gold bases, and black, grey and steel bases. Walnut is our standard visible timber; other timbers on request.
Height and chairs
A dining table is usually about 75 cm high with chairs whose seats are about 45 cm. That leaves a comfortable 28 to 30 cm between seat and tabletop. If you already own chairs, bring one to the studio. If you want a matching set, see our dining sets with chairs.
A checklist before you order
- Measure the room, and mark the table's footprint on the floor with tape.
- Check the 90 cm clearance behind every chair, and the route in from the door and lift.
- Choose the top by daily use, then check a sample in daylight.
- Check where the base sits against your chairs.
- Ask for the quote after the drawing, with the size, top and base written down.
How a custom dining table is ordered at Mavensoft Furniture
- Send photographs of your dining room and the measurements.
