A centre table has a job to do before it has a look. It has to hold a tray and two cups, leave room for knees and walking, and still look right from the sofa. Get the size and shape right first, then choose the top and base you like.
Start with the sofa
The sofa sets the size of the table. These are the rules we draw to:
- Length: about two-thirds of the sofa's length. A 220 cm sofa takes a table of around 120 to 150 cm.
- Height: level with the sofa seat or a few centimetres lower, usually 38 to 45 cm. A table higher than the seat feels like a barrier.
- Gap: leave 35 to 45 cm between the sofa and the table edge. That is enough for your knees and for reaching a cup, and not so far that you have to lean.
- Walkway: keep 60 to 75 cm free where people walk past the table.
If your sofa is not bought yet, choose it first. Our custom sofas are drawn to the wall, so you can plan the table beside the sofa on the same drawing.
Shape: rectangle, square or round
A rectangle suits a long sofa and a long, narrow room. A square suits the corner of an L-shaped sofa, where it can be reached from both arms. A round table is gentler in a small room, has no corners to catch a child, and is easy to walk around.
Our Ananta is a round example: a white sintered-stone top on gold rings that cross beneath it. Our Lata set pairs a square stone centre table on a black looped base with a round side table on a curved stem.
Nesting tables: when two or three are better than one
Nesting tables are two or three tables of graduated sizes that slide into one another. They stay tucked together for everyday use and pull apart when you have guests. They are a good answer to a room that is too small for one large table, and to a household that is sometimes busy and sometimes not.
We group them by base and material so you can browse close to your room: glass nesting tables, walnut nesting tables, gold and bronze nesting tables, and black and white nesting tables.
A centre table with a side table
If your seating wraps around the table, a centre table with a matching side table does the work of two pieces and keeps the materials in step. See the centre table sets, and the side tables and trolleys to place beside the sofa arm. A side table should be about as high as the arm of the sofa.
A table with stools underneath
If your living room gets crowded when guests come, a coffee table with stools that tuck fully beneath it gives you extra seats without a permanent footprint. Look at the Sabha, a square sintered-stone table with upholstered cube stools that slide underneath, and the Goshthi, a coffee table over a drawer box with stools and a raised side top.
Storage
Remote controls, coasters and magazines need somewhere to go. A drawer box, a lower shelf or a nesting tray keeps the top clear. Browse gold-base and storage coffee tables if you want storage built in. If you like a design that has no drawer, ask us what is possible, because every table is made to order.
The top: stone, glass or timber
- Sintered stone: our stone-look tops wipe clean and resist heat and stains, so they suit a table that gets used every day. See the stone-look coffee tables.
- Glass: light to look at, and it keeps a small room open. See the glass and walnut coffee tables.
- Timber: warm to the touch. Walnut is our standard visible timber; other timbers on request.
- Natural stone: Italian marble and onyx are available on request. Our comparison of marble, onyx and sintered stone applies to a centre table as much as to a dining table.
Look at the sample in your own light before you decide. Our material library is where we show them side by side.
A checklist before you order
- Measure the sofa, and the floor space in front of it.
- Decide the length, the height and the 35 to 45 cm gap.
- Choose round, square or rectangular by the shape of your seating.
- Decide whether one table, a nesting set, or a table with stools suits how you live.
- Choose the top by daily use, and check a sample in daylight.
How a custom centre table is ordered at Mavensoft Furniture
- Send photographs of your living room, with the sofa and the floor in front of it.
- Spend an hour at our Gachibowli design studio. The designer draws while you watch, and you choose the top and base from physical samples.
- Approve the drawing. Our typical delivery is 21–30 days from the approved drawing, and we confirm the date in writing with your order.
- We build the table in our own factory, and our own team delivers it across Hyderabad.
Every centre table is made to order and quoted after the drawing. The design session carries no obligation and no deposit, so you can book one and bring the room with you.
