A small apartment that needs its coffee table to hold things
In a one-bedroom apartment the coffee table is often the only surface in the living room, so it has to hold far more than a cup.
Peti puts a white drawer box beneath a warm walnut top, and adds a smoked-glass side table on a black stand for the overflow.
Four decisions
A walnut top
The square top is walnut veneer under a matte lacquer, warm to the hand and kind to a timber floor.
A white drawer box
Beneath the top sits a white lacquered box with a drawer for remotes, chargers and papers.
A glass side table
A smoked-glass side table on a slim black stand slides beside the sofa arm for a lamp or a cup.
Two finishes
Warm walnut over crisp white makes the table feel modern without being cold.
Materials, named

The making
The box is built in engineered wood and lacquered white in several coats, the drawer fitted on metal runners, and the walnut top veneered and lacquered to match.
The finished piece
It suits a compact apartment living room with a two-seat sofa, where every piece has to earn its place.
