The style

What makes a sofa a Chesterfield

The Chesterfield is one of the oldest sofa shapes still made, a British design said to take its name from an Earl of Chesterfield. It has outlasted fashions for two centuries because it looks right in a panelled study and in a bare modern flat alike.

In Hyderabad it suits the formal drawing rooms of Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills bungalows as well as a single statement piece in a Kokapet apartment. Because ours are made to order, the proportions are drawn to your room rather than copied from a catalogue.

Deep buttoning

The back and arms are drawn in with buttons into a diamond pattern, the detail everyone recognises. The buttons are planned on the drawing so the diamonds line up across the back and round the arms.

Rolled arms, level with the back

The arms roll outwards and rise to the same height as the back, so the sofa reads as one continuous, enclosing shape.

A low, deep seat

A Chesterfield sits lower and more upright than a lounge sofa, which suits a drawing room, a study or a library wall.

Feet and trim

Turned wooden feet or low bun feet, with or without a line of nailheads along the arms, chosen to suit a classic or a modern room.

Drawn to your room

Every Chesterfield is made to order

  • Size: a two-seater, a three-seater, a long four-seater, a corner Chesterfield or a matching armchair, drawn to the wall you measure.
  • Cover: full-grain leather or velvet, chosen as physical samples from our material library.
  • Colour: classic oxblood, tan, bottle green or black leather, or velvet in any shade.
  • Details: buttoned or plain seat cushions, nailhead trim, and turned or bun feet.

Leather wipes clean and darkens gracefully with the years, and it is the classic Chesterfield cover. Velvet is softer to sit on and richer in colour. In a sunny Hyderabad room we will show you how each sample looks in daylight before you decide.
