Four decisions
An X base
Two panels cross beneath the centre of the top, bracing the table in both directions.
Black and white
Black and white panels alternate around the X, a crisp graphic contrast from every side.
A central support
With the support at the centre, every edge of a round or square table is free.
Graphic
The base reads as a strong black-and-white drawing against a pale floor, from every side of the table.
Materials, named
Panels in black and white lacquer, photographed on their own without a top; the top is cut to order.
The making
The panels are cut, halved to cross, edged and lacquered in alternating black and white, each coat flatted before the next.
The finished piece
It suits a monochrome dining room with black-and-white floor tiles and a white marble top.
