The brief

A modern living room that wants a drum base with rhythm

A solid drum is calm, but a drum built of slats has rhythm, with light falling between every strip.

Dhol builds its black drums from vertical slats like the staves of a dhol, under grey tops veined like storm clouds.

Four decisions

Slatted drums

Each drum is built of black vertical slats, with narrow gaps that let light and shadow through.

Grey veined tops

Round grey sintered-stone tops with dark veining sit above, moody and calm.

Rhythm in the base

The repeated slats give the base a beat, like the staves of a drum.

Two heights

The smaller table tucks beside the larger, so the pair overlaps at the sofa.

Materials, named

As shown, round grey sintered-stone tops with dark veining on slatted drums of black lacquered engineered wood.

Body Black, satin lacquer over engineered wood

The making

Each slat is cut, sanded and lacquered black, then fixed one by one around top and bottom rings to form the drum.

The finished piece

They suit a modern living room with a charcoal sofa, a grey rug and warm lamps.

The Dhol is drawn at our Gachibowli studio, made in our own factory, and delivered across Hyderabad, from Hitec City and Madhapur to Kokapet and Banjara Hills.
